UMTS/3G USB modem configuration
The Fonera 2.0 allows you to wirelessly share your 3G broadband connection virtually anywhere. All you will need is an activated 3G USB modem and a broadband data plan.
For compatible 3G USB Modems, please visit our compatible UMTS/3G USB dongle list.
Fonera 2.0g: USB 1.0 and USB 1.1 3G Modem won't work directly, you will need placing a USB 2.0 hub in between the Modem and the Fonera2.0g. In general only USB 2.0 devices can be connected directly to the Fonera 2.0g. If you ever connect a USB 1.0/1.1 device, make sure you reboot the Fonera; this will allow it to detect USB devices again.
To start sharing your 3G broadband with the Fonera 2.0 it is important to Configure all settings before Connecting the 3G USB modem.
Configuration
- Click the 3G icon on the lower-right side of the Dashboard.
- Once at insided the UMTS/3G application click on "Configure"
- The page for setting your dial in information will appear.
UMTS/3G credentials
- Country Here you can choose your Country (Country where the 3G contract was subscribed) or "Custom Config" if you rather set the dial in settings manually.
- Provider: This is a list of known providers to the Fonera. If your provider is listed, it means that the Fonera has its connection settings. If your provider is not available, you will have to chose "Custom Configuration" in the Country drop-down menu.
- PIN: Enter the PIN of your SIM card. If you do not have a PIN set, leave this field empty.
Advanced Settings
- Use default DNS: Default's "enabled" works for most providers.
- Activate Hotspot: This option let you chose whether to broadcast a FON Spot signal or not, when connected by 3G. It is "disabled", by default as many mobile Data-contracts still have a very limited traffic volume. However if you want to register the Fonera connected through 3G, you will need to enable this function at least for this.
Connect the UMTS/3G modem
Simply plug the dongle at the Foneras USB port (with the Fonera 2.0g eventually you might need a USB 2.0 hub) and wait until the devices is recognized (about 30 seconds). If the modem is detected, the red "X" over the 3G icon will go away. If the Configuration data was correctly set, the Fonera will automatically dial in. Sometimes it might be necessary to reboot the router after changing the settings.
Disconnect
To disconnect the UMTS connection you have to unplug the USB modem. If you plug it in again, it will reconnect automatically.
