Compatibility List
From FON Wiki Beta
Important clarification: You can connect to FON Spots with any WiFi device with an HTML browser (as you have to login to authenticate yourself). If your WiFi device does not appear in this list, it does not mean that it is NOT compatible with FON. It only means that no one has confirmed it yet. If you have any device, and you can confirm it's compatibility, please add it to the list. If you have any tips & tricks concerning that device - this is the place for sharing them with others.
This page is intended to list devices that we have confirmed work with with FON products. Either because you can connect a Fonera to it, this is the case for modem or routers, or because you can connect to a FON Spot with it.

Linux/Unix
- Connecting with MyPlace using Linux
- Make sure you have a Linux distribution that allows WPA/TKIP encryption
- Make sure you have a Wifi network card that supports WPA/TKIP encryption
- In the next example our Wifi pcmcia card is "ra0" but it can be something else on your linux!
- In the example below we have configured our Fonera to use WPA2!
- by default the Fonera operates at WPA/TKIP
vi /etc/network/interfaces allow-hotplug ra0 iface ra0 inet dhcp pre-up iwconfig ra0 mode managed pre-up iwpriv ra0 set AuthMode=WPA2PSK pre-up iwpriv ra0 set EncrypType=TKIP pre-up iwconfig ra0 essid "MyPlace" pre-up iwpriv ra0 set WPAPSK=********************* pre-up iwconfig ra0 essid "MyPlace"
- Test with "ping 192.168.10.1"
A better idea is to use WPA_Supplicant. See the Manual of your Distro for Installation and Configuration.
Ubuntu
- There is a known issue in some releases of Ubuntu where it can only detect networks on channel 1 & 11
To fix this you have to edit the following file:
/etc/modprobe.d/options
- and add this line :
options mac80211 ieee80211_regdom=64
- save & reboot
7.10 Gutsy Gibbon
8.04 Hardy Heron
8.10 Intrepid Ibex

See Gentoo Wiki for Configuration of WPA.

tested devices
USB
- RealtekRTL8187 : NOK : 100% signal with FON, but unable to connect (Report)
- Edimax 150Mbps nLite EW7711UTN (1T1R) : OK BUT AVOID : It hardly connects at Wifi-N speeds, can not connect to hotspots that are not in thesame room... it's small size has it's repercussions on it's antenna...no possibility to add a better antenna (unless soldering?) infosheet
- Zydas 1211B : OK : Recommended...works perfectly to connect to fonspots which are a few rooms away...The antenna can be replaced but is by default better than usb sticks that don't have any antenna...
- Belkin Wireless G rev2 : OK BUT AVOID : It works nice on a FONspot but we recommend max 1 wall inbetween and to be happy with a 1Mbps speed. The device gets very hot...but no issues in surfing the net 24/24h 7d/7d via a FONSPOT!
