Density Projects
From FON Wiki Beta
FON Density projects objective is turning complete neighborhoods into free and open WiFi Zones. Places where you can always be connected and where WiFi is cheap (for non FON members) or free. They are also grassroots efforts to bring WiFi to all through the contributions of individual business owners and residents. By everyone sharing a bit of their internet connection, we can make internet access pervasive and available to all. We hope FON Density projects will set an example for neighborhoods and cities of how a community based approach can be successful in creating WiFi coverage.
Residents who want to become Foneros and share some of their broadband with the rest of the FON Community gain free and unlimited access to over 250,000 FON Spots around the world. Residents and all of our Foneros visiting the neighborhood will enjoy WiFi coverage.

England
London: Shoreditch
Shoreditch is an area of London within the London Borough of Hackney. It is a built-up part of the inner city immediately to the north of the City of London, located 2.3 miles (3.7 km) north east of Charing Cross. Its historic heart is Shoreditch High Street and Shoreditch Church. In the past the area of Shoreditch was defined by the borders of the parish of Shoreditch which also defined the borders of the Metropolitan Borough of Shoreditch. Since 1965, when the latter unit of local government was dissolved, it has been more fuzzily defined. Contemporary Shoreditch is often seen as the area bordered to the north by Old Street, to the east by the northern end of Brick Lane, to the south by Spitalfields market and to the west by Old Street Station. However, Hoxton to the north of Old Street was historically part of Shoreditch parish and borough and is still, often, conflated with it.

Munich: HotspotM
FON is all about user-generated infrastructure. In order to promote the FON community in Germany, FON is giving several hundred routers for FREE to some cities. We will start in Munich with 300 Routers that will be given to people who want to become FONeros and live in certain downtown areas: business district, pedestrian zone or around the University.
To achieve a good density of FON WiFi signal within these specific areas, we have selected 4 postcodes and will give away free promotional FON routers. The postcodes in Munich are 80331, 80333, 80799 and 80469.
If you happen to live there and want to share your DSL connection with all the Foneros worldwide and roam the world for free, send an email including your Family Name, First Name, Street, Zip Code and your phone number so we can contact you.

Rome: Trastevere
Arezzo
The city of Arezzo will soon host one of the first Italian municipal WiFi networks, thanks to an agreement with FON and the involvement of its citizens, who will share their Internet connections and contribute to the roll out of the network. The municipality will install FON Hotspots in strategical locations all around the city. Citizens who want to access the network for free will have a chance to become Foneros and share their own broadband connections, expanding the coverage of the network. Citizens who won’t contribute to the network, tourists and anybody visiting the city who is not a Fonero, will still have a chance to access the Internet for free for 15 minutes (watching a 15 second advertisement) or will be able to buy a daily pass for 3 euros. The municipality will also use the network to inform and communicate with citizens and tourists, using the welcome page of a custom built portal. FON offers a sustainable solution for municipalities that want to build a muni WiFi network with limited investment and the direct involvement of their citizens in the roll out of the network.

Portugal
Lisbon: Campo de Ourique
October 18th became another landmark for FON, when we officially launched a WiFi density project in Campo de Ourique, a district in Lisbon with its own unique atmosphere. Without being too touristy, Campo de Ourique is bustling with cultural and commercial activity, and has succeeded in becoming something like a dynamic mini city within Lisbon itself.
In “ZON@FON em Campo de Ourique” we have been able to experience the efficiency and speed of collaborating with a partner like ZON; in less than a month, the project has grown to include 225 hotspots, to date. We can now say that practically 100% of Campo de Ourique is covered with WiFi through ZON@FON (here you can see the evolution of the coverage).
Since the goal of covering the whole district with ZON@FON connections has almost been reached, we now want to focus on promoting the usage so that more and more people get to enjoy the service. Now after the launch of the project, we are starting giving incentives for using the network such as signing up commercial establishments to become contributors, which will help us promote the project and offer information through posters, brochures, connection passes etc. Also, in the next days we will launch the webpage of the project.
The launch was supported by street actions in el Jardim da Parada, a family park, and the WiFi epicentre of Campo de Ourique. Dozens of children participated in a WiFi contest where they connected to several ZON@FON hotspots spread out in the district, using “Magalhaes” PCs, which is a type of Portuguese manufactured OLPC. There were also giants on stilts that announced that they themselves were ZON@FON Hotspots, segways completely revamped with the brand, information points, gifts for the children and the elderly, etc.

Geneva
Geneva's plans to create an Internet connected community has moved a step ahead, with the city's announcement that 500 citizens will be invited to join Fon Geneva, the international wifi community, free of charge in return for making their own wifi connection free to others in Geneva. Fon is a Spanish company whose founder Martin Varsavsky has spent much time in Geneva, has made waves in the Internet industry for separating public and private wifi signals, making it possible to safely provide very cheap or free Internet access to large numbers of people.
This is the second phase of Geneva's wifi project: the first was completed in June when the city set up several wifi access points in parks and other public areas.
