FON
From FON Wiki Beta
A short summary
FON is the world’s largest WiFi sharing community. FON's La Fonera wireless routers enable people to share a small part of their broadband Internet service with the FON Community. In return for sharing, FON members - Foneros - gain free WiFi access at FON Spots worldwide. FON, whose investors include Google, Skype, British Telecom and others has grown virally to over 800,000 members and 300,000 hotspots since its founding in 2006.
People that don’t share their broadband with a La Fonera can still connect to FON Spots around the world by purchasing inexpensive access passes.
Benefits
Why should I join FON?
- You already pay for your Internet connection at home? Why pay twice? You share your connection at home and wherever you find a FON Spot (there are a lot and their number is growing) you connect for free.
- If you have a good location (i.ex. in front of a bar/cafe) you even can make a bit of money out of your internet connection by selling day passes through your FON Spot to 'Alien' Foneros.
The Deal
You compromise to keep the La Fonera running 24/7. What does that mean?
The FON idea will only work, if everybody keeps it's router running continuously. That does not mean, that you will be breaking your part of the deal when you are victim of a blackout or when your internet connection is down. We simply ask you not to switch off the La Fonera when you go to bed, or leave for a weekend. Find more information on our Roaming Policy.
