FON Spot Status Checklist

There are many ways to know the status of your FON Spot at every moment. Two of them are specially useful to notify you it's not online: the FON Maps and the Stay Connected Reminder Emails

FON Maps

When you search for your FON Spot using the FON Maps you will see (with a 10-15 minutes delay) the status of your La Fonera router, thanks to what we call "Node Status"

Stay Connected Reminder Emails

These emails are automatically sent when:

  • 2 days have past since we last detected your La Fonera as online.
  • 14 days have past since we last detected your La Fonera as online.
  • 30 days have past since we last detected your La Fonera as online.

Troubleshooting

If your FON Spot is show as offline in the FON Maps and/or you received an email to notify your FON Spot is not online the following article might help explaing why this is happening and what you can do to fix it.

FON uses a signal called "HeartBeat", which is sent out periodically by FON routers, to show your presence on the FON Maps and allow other members to find you if they need Internet access. Another, less obvious purpose of HeartBeat, is to update the settings and software of your La Fonera.

To know if your La Fonera router is sending out a HeartBeat, simply access your My FON (userzone) by logging in at fon.com and check your FON Spot STATUS.

FON Spot is online
FON Spot is offline

If your FON Spot is shown as offline it means that it is not sending out a HeartBeat Signal or that the signal is not reaching the FON Servers. In this case we suggest the following:

  1. Make sure you can see both SSIDs (MyPlace & FON_), and that you can browse the Internet while connected to either one.
  2. Reboot the la Fonera by powercycling it, and reboot your ISP's modem/router (to which the La Fonera is connected) as well. If you switch off both, switch your ISP's modem/router on first and then the La Fonera, only after the first one is completely booted.
  3. Check all network cables.
  4. Make sure a firewall is not blocking outgoing traffic (see Which Ports do La Fonera needs? for a list of ports to open on your firewall)
  5. As a last resort, try a hardware reset.

After trying the above solutions go back to your userzone and see whether your FON Spot Status has changed to online.

If your FON Spot Status changes to online, but switches to offline after a while, please contact a FON support representative and let him know the date and time you tried to get it online.
