How to use the Friends and Family section?
If you want to give free access to your friends or family members who connect to your router, you can make up to five accounts using the Friends and Family section. These accounts will grant them access only for your specific FON Spot for which they've been created. To log in, the accounts need to be used in the same way as the normal FON account when logging into the FON Spot captive portal.
Friends and Family is a feature that was developed for the old Linksys Firmware which does not provide an encrypted private signal. For most cases it's more easy and comfortable to give any family or friend your router's WPA key. There is no limited number of simultaneous users sharing the WPA key of the private signal 'MyPlace'. But if giving away your WPA to others makes you feel uncomfortable, the Friends & Family feature is still available.
Create a Friends and Family account
IMPORTANT: The La Fonera must have Internet connection (must be shown as online at your MyFON page).
- Go to the FON web site at http://www.fon.com
- Type your FON username and password to access your User Zone (MyFON)
- Once logged into MyFON, you select 'Configure your FON Router' in the menu on the top.
- Switch to the 'Friends and Family' tab. Here you can create up to 5 local users by typing their nickname (do not use email addresses) and a password for each.
- Click on 'save FON Spot personalization' to save your changes (the changes may take up to 30 minutes to take effect on your La Fonera).
- When this process is finished, tell your friend or family member to connect to your FON Spot signal (FON_...) with the WiFi device they want to use.
- Enter any page in the browser (example: www.wikipedia.org)
- The FON Spot captive portal will appear. Use the normal login boxes introducing nickname and password.
- If you have done all of this correctly, you can now navigate on Internet.
NOTES:
- Bear in mind Friends and Family users will only be able to log in on this one router. (they wont be able to roam)
- Friends and Family feature is currently not available in Russia, Portugal and the UK
