Translating FON Wiki

From FON Wiki Beta

Jump to: navigation, search

FON Wiki hosts all documentation regarding FON and its products; as well as many other user generated content useful for the FON Community. You can help us translating FON Wiki into your language. It's easy, there's only a few things to know which this page will do its best to explain.

Preliminary

  • Find the pages candidate for translation: Pages that were considered as worth being translated are placed in the Translation namespace (pages with name starting by Translation:). You may find a list of these pages there
  • Call for the translation of a page: Place pages in the Translation namespace as explained there. Just keep in mind that not all content are worth being translated into languages different than English. Content might be specific to a country or a region, or the page often change, and maintaining a sync translation will require a lot of work. Sometime it's reasonable to have a page only in one consistent version, if you have any doubts you may use the discussion tab to ask for advise.
  • English is the main language of FON Wiki: If you add information to any translated page, please add this information to the English page as well.

Start translating

  • You need a confirm FON Wiki account to edit or create pages, more details in FON Wiki howto.
  • Find a page candidate for translation from there
  • By clicking on the link you will be redirected to the original page (usually the English page), click on the edit tab and copy the content of the page.
  • Click on the Cancel link next to the Show Changes button. You will be back to the original language page, and have the following in your address bar:
http://wiki.fon.com/wiki/Fonera_2.0g or the name of the page you are willing to translate
  • Append to the url in the address bar /languagecode. For example:
http://wiki.fon.com/wiki/Fonera_2.0g/de if you want to translate the page to German
  • If the translation isn't yet started you will create the page by clicking on edit this page
  • Paste the original text. You can now start translating!

Best practices

  • Give a short description of what you did when translating or editing a translation. To do so use the "Summary" field just above the Save page button. Thanks to that we will know if your translation is finished or if you will be back later for example.
  • Edit the category at the bottom of the page so it matches the language of your translation:
[[Category:EN]] you may change 'EN' to, for example 'DE', if you translate from English to German
  • Make sure that the language menu is displayed both on the original page and on your translated version. To add the language menu, add the following at the bottom of the page.
{{languages}}
  • If you want to to translate the title of the page, to prevent it to appear in English with /languagecode append you may use the following at the beginning of the page:
{{DISPLAYTITLE:Contributing to FON Wiki}}
  • When the translated page links to other FON Wiki pages, it might be wise to modify the links so they point to a page in the same language if it does exist.
[[Fonera 2.0g/de|Fonera 2.0g]] to link to the German version of the Fonera 2.0g page
  • Do not create create translation subpage if you don't start to translate them right away:
    • They can get outdated in the meantime
    • They appear twice in search
    • They appear in the language menu even if they are not translated
