FON and Joikusoft released an exclusive version of Joikusoft's premium mobile hotspot solution, named FonJoikuSpot. FonJoikuSpot is an exclusive offering for members of the FON community. Foneros will be able to share their mobile Internet connection with up to 5 friends, who can connect to their FonJoikuSpot. It was launched on 30 September and Foneros can acquire it for only 10 euros whereas the standard premium version costs 45 euros.

Fon and Joikusoft unveil as for to-date FonJoikuSpot, a mobile software solution that transforms mobile phones to high speed broadband 3G internet modems, allowing internet access anywhere.

FonJoikuSpot is a one-click internet access solution. Switch it on, and your phone becomes a Wi-Fi internet gateway.

With FonJoikuSpot, you can connect your laptop, iPod or other WiFi gadget to internet instantly and securely, and enjoy 3G speed. Version Details

FonJoikuSpot 2.2 Version details

  1. FonJoikuSpot software client installs and works in Symbian S60v3 devices (e.g. Nokia N95, Nokia N95 8GB, Nokia E90, …). Device must have WLAN and 3G support.
  2. FonJoikuSpot has been tested with latest Nokia phone firmware versions. If required, please update your phone’s firmware easily with Nokia Software Updater (http://europe.nokia.com/A4579163). Please note: The firmware should be not older than from October 2007.
  3. Please note: Some older IBM and Lenovo laptop models are not compatible with FonJoikuSpot. Their WLAN chipset is not fully compatible with Nokia phones.
  4. FonJoikuSpot supports 128 bit WEP encryption with automatic key generator.
  5. FonJoikuSpot supports Battery Threshold. It will shut down the application when battery level is too low. (You can set the level under Settings)
  6. FonJoikuSpot allows you to select the transmitting WLAN channel. By default it is set to Automatic.

Installation Manual

  1. Buy and download from the JoikuShop.
  2. Install the FonJoikuSpot_2_2.sis file into your phone with Nokia PC Suite or sending it to your phone via Bluetooth from your laptop. You also get an email; if you have email configured on your Nokia; you can click on the link and fetch & execute the file directly from the internet. You can also send the link by SMS.
  3. Install the file.
  4. The phone asks you whether you want to install the software.
  5. Click “OK” and select whether you wish to install it to your phone memory or external memory card.
  6. As part of the installation you need to approve the terms of use in order to use the software.
  7. After installation is complete please reboot your Phone. This will activate FonJoikuSpot.
  8. As part of the installation you need to approve the privacy and legal note in order to use the software.
  9. FonJoikuSpot is now installed and can be found in your phone’s desktop under “Installations” or “Applications”.
  10. FonJoikuSpot is installed and can be found under Installations folder in your device
  11. You can move the application from this folder to any folder you like such as main folder by clicking “options -> move -> folder name”.
  12. Click on the FonJoikuSpot icon and the application starts.
  13. You are prompted “Allow sharing your internet connection”, and by selecting “Yes” you turn your device into a WLAN HotSpot that shares your phones 3G internet connection to external devices.
  14. “Allow sharing your internet connection with external devices” turns your device into a WLAN HotSpot
  15. Choose the Internet connection that you want to share over WLAN (e.g. your operators default internet access point). Please choose your 3G connection to share. Note that you are not able to share WLAN connection.
  16. Choose your preferred internet connection from your network operator and activate the FonJoikuSpot. “FonJoikuSpot started” indicates successful HotSpot creation that is visible via WLAN to external devices
  17. FonJoikuSpot is now active and external devices can find it when scanning for open WLAN networks. External devices see your FonJoikuSpot as “FonJoikuSpot WLAN network”, and they can choose to connect to internet via it.

Security

  1. FonJoikuSpot needs to be stopped before you can adjust settings. Click Options -> Stop.
  2. You can now set the name of your FonJoikuSpot network (FonJoikuSpot_yourname e.g.)
  3. You can also set the default internet connection; this will prevent future prompts when starting FonJoikuSpot.
  4. You can also set the Battery Threshold; this will shut down FonJoikuSpot when battery level is too low. Please select a level that will fit your needs.
  5. If you want, you can set the Landing Page and GPS Positioning ON. By doing this you can see your exact location on Google Maps at Landing page and you can perform location based searches from services nearby. Location based search requires that the phone has support for GPS and the signal is received from GPS satellite.
  6. If you want, you can set the encryption on. This is not compulsory, but we suggest you to do it especially if you don’t have an unlimited data plan. The following settings are best:
    1. Encryption: WEP Open
    2. Encryption key type: ASCII
    3. Encryption key length: 128bit
    4. Encryption key: This is generated automatically. You can also change it; juts remember to set 13 characters. Write down your key, you will need it when setting up windows or your other wireless devices. The key must be exactly same in FonJoikuSpot and in your WLAN device.
    5. Please note: If you change the encryption settings later on in FonJoikuSpot, you will need the change the settings also in all your WLAN devices.
  7. To Finish click Back and start your FonJoikuSpot by pressing Options -> Start.

Usage

Windows XP

  1. Open your laptop and make sure your WLAN is turned on.
  2. Choose WLAN networks (typically Windows WLAN icon is displayed in the lower hand right corner bar).
  3. Click “Refresh network list”. Your computer should now discover the open FonJoikuSpot WLAN access point, if the FonJoikuSpot is active.
  4. Click the FonJoikuSpot access point to connect to the web.
  5. If FonJoikuSpot is not discovered by your computer, make sure FonJoikuSpot is in “connected” mode.
  6. Your computer will discover the FonJoikuSpot WLAN access point. Click on the FonJoikuSpot network to connect. If you have set up the encryption, you will be prompted for the key. Type it twice exactly. Windows will not ask it again. Please note: If you have previously used FonJoikuSpot without encryption, you will need to refresh the Wireless network list in Windows. This will allow you to see the FonJoikuSpot network with encryption on. Type in your passphrase when prompted.
  7. Open your web browser and start surfing.

Windows Vista

  1. Select ”Start .. Settings .. Network connections .. Wireless Network Connection”
  2. Use the “Wireless Network Connection” application to make the connection
  3. Click “refresh” icon and select FonJoikuSpot. By refreshing the available wireless networks your computer will discover the FonJoikuSpot. Make sure the FonJoikuSpot is connected.
    1. Type in the wep passphrase. (If you have not set an encryption, you can skip this step)
    2. FonJoikuSpot is an “ad hoc” network and Windows VISTA is likely to give you this type of a “warning message”. Select Connect Anyway in case you want to establish the connection via FonJoikuSpot.
  4. Check that ”Save this network” is selected and close. This will help you connect automatically next time. You will get this message to indicate the successful connection via FonJoikuSpot. Click “Save this network” in case you want to store it for future usage.
  5. Next Windows Vista will ask your location. Choose “Home”. Windows VISTA may ask for your network location. We recommend selecting “Home” option.
  6. Further on, click close. The network is now saved. (You don’t have to repeat this step after the first time if you stored the network) Your network is now saved and you can close the Wireless Network application.
  7. Open your web browser and start surfing.

Tips & Trics

Ad hoc mode in some laptops

Some laptops (depends of the laptop vendor) may require that you allow “Computer–to-computer (ad-hoc) networks only” for FonJoikuSpot. This is NOT the normal case, but you may try it if the connection does not work automatically.

  1. Click on the Wireless network icon -> View Wireless networks -> Change Advanced Settings -> Advanced.
  2. Choose “Computer–to-computer (ad-hoc) networks only”.

WLAN Power save mode in Nokia phones

If you want to improve the WLAN functionality in your Nokia phone, please set the “Power saving mode” to “Disabled”.

  1. Go Tools -> Settings -> Connection -> Wireless LAN.
  2. Click “Options” and “Advanced Settings”. You will be prompted “Changing advanced settings is not recommended. Continue anyway?”.
  3. Click Yes.
  4. Make sure that “Automatic configuration” is set to “Disabled” and “Power saving” is also set to “Disabled”.
