How to contribute to FON Wiki
We want the FON Wiki to become the ultimate resource regarding all documentation about FON and its products, but more general information about WiFi are also welcome.
Ways to contribute
- The easiest way is to correct spelling mistakes or typos you might find.
- Translate (see the guidelines for translations as well)
- Help us translating existing pages into your language or improve existing translations. You can identify pages where the translation is pending by the yellow warning sign at the top.
- If you find a page, which still doesn't exist in your language, you can create this page and start the translations. There are some pages which only exist in English, as it's reasonable to have them in one consistent version. If you would like to be responsible for keeping a consistent translation of such a page, please contact the FON Wiki Team.
- Create new content:
- You can add new chapters, better explanations, screenshots, or present your FON Spot in existing pages.
- Create new pages with new content. Like How-To's for new WiFi devices to our compatibility list, instructions for you local ISP, or any thing that does'nt fit in existing pages. If you create a page in a non English language consider whether it is interesting or not to have the page you just created in English. If it is the case, create the English page as well. If you are able to do a basic English translation that would be great, but it is not mandatory. Please check out the technical instruction.
Keep in mind: This is a knowledge base and not a place to expose your private opinions. If you want to expose your opinion or provide constructive critics, please use the FON Boards. Thank you for your understanding.
Languages
For the moment, FON Wiki is only available in the following languages. You can contribute to a translation in these languages, but we are not creating articles in other languages yet. If FON Wiki is a success we will see how to integrate other languages. We will need responsible volunteers to do so. If you're interested, please get in touch with us.
Technical instructions
Create a FON Wiki account
The first thing you need to change any content at the FON Wiki is a account
- Click on the 'Log in/Create account' link in the upper right corner.
- On the log in screen, go on to the 'create a new account' page.
- Fill in the registration form. Use a valid email, as you have to confirm the registration. You will receive a Email with a link. Please check your SPAM box, if you don't receive anything. If you log in to your FON Wiki account, you can ask the system to resend this email.
- When you confirmed the Email by clicking the link, you can start!
Create a page
There are several ways to create a new page in a Wiki. We will explain you the easiest one (in our opinion):
- Type http://wiki.fon.com/wiki/PageTitle in the address bar of your browser an click the "go" button.
- Please, use short, self explaining, English titles.
- If you create a page in any other of the supported languages, use the English title and append a '/country code' like in http://wiki.fon.com/wiki/PageTitle/de for German for example.
- Now you can edit the page. After you save the changes for the first time, the page exists.
- Add the following text lines on the top of any page you create:
[[Category:EN]] or the country code depending on the language {{Missing Translation/de}} use this template, if the translation is not completed
Define the language of the page
When a page is created (saved the first time), the language of the page should be defined. By default the system supposes, that every new page is in English. So, if you created a page in another (available) language, please do the following:
- Click on the 'Language tab'
- Select the language that applies
- Click on the 'Change the Language' button
- In the 'List of available translations for this article:' section, add the page title of the original English page.
- Click on 'Add', so the system knows from which original page this is the translation.
Link your page
Once your page created and the language set you need to create a link that leads to it so that people can find your page. Add to an existing page (or several)
[[Name of your page | name you want to display]]
Use Discussion and Talk pages
Each page as a tab called 'Discussion'. It is a regular WiKi page meant to discuss changes that were performed (by yourself or others), changes that would be needed, like merging a page to another. Feel free to discuss any changes that you don't feel confident to do yourself. You can add a time stamp by clicking on the '+'
