FON Firmware for other routers
Description
In the beginnings of FON, we started with an adapted firmware for some Linksys and Buffalo routers. This Firmware is still available and can be used to convert an existing router into a FON Spot.
You will have a fully functional FON Spot. Running such a router grants you all the rights a Bill or Linus Fonero running a La Fonera has.
The main difference to the new Foneras is, that this firmware version does not provide the two separate WiFi signals as the La Fonera do. That means, if you plan to use the router yourself, you'll have to log in with you FON account data or use one of the 5 Friends and Family accounts, you can create.
We want to keep this option as an easy way to enter the FON community. If you're not 100% sure of understanding the installation process, think about the more comfortable option; purchasing a La Fonera or a La Fonera+.
List of FON compatible routers
At this moment in time, only the following router models are compatible with our firmware:
Linksys WRT54G (up to version 4)
WRT54GL
WRT54GS
WRT54GS (version 4)
Buffalo WZR-RS-G54

WHR-G54S

How do I install the FON Firmware on the Linksys/Buffalo Router
- Download the newest firmware version that corresponds to the model of your compatible router
- Save the file in your PC in a location where you can find it easily, for example on the desktop, because you will need it later on.
- Connect your PC to your router by plugging the network cable into one of the four LAN ports of the router.
- Access the router’s setup page by typing http://192.168.10.1/ in the address line of your browser.
- If you have not accessed this page before you will have to enter a password to access the Administration Console. Don't forget to "Save" and "Apply" the changes.
- If you have visited the console before, you must enter your chosen password. The default password and username for the 0.6.6 versions is "admin" and "admin".
- In the top menu click on the "System" option.
- Click on "Update Firmware" in the dropdown menu.
- Tick the "Erase the JFFS2 partition" and "Erase NVRAM" boxes if the firmware version you have just installed is 0.5.0, 0.5.2 or 0.6.2.0.; If the firmware version you have installed is 0.6.5 or 0.6.6 only tick the FIRST box.
- Locate the firmware file that you downloaded and click on "Update".
- In approximately 2 minutes the previous firmware will have been erased and the new version will be installed; the green "DMZ" light will come on and will stay on for 2 or 3 minutes while the firmware is being loaded into the router's memory.
- Once the DMZ light has gone out, the firmware has been fully upgraded.
Basic Troubleshooting
If the power LED blinks constantly and you are not able to browse the Web through your Linksys router, you can try the following:
First of all please try to reset the router:
- Power-cycle it.
- Pushing the reset button for about 10 seconds or so
- If the power LED continues to flicker try unplugging the Ethernet cable first and then the power one.
If the problem persists:
- Switch the router off and on again and as soon as the DMZ LED lits push the reset button for few seconds. The router will then have the following IP: 192.168.1.1
- Open a command line and type the following:
"telnet 192.168.1.1" and hit return.
Then:
"nvram set lan_ipaddr=192.168.10.1"
and finally:
"nvram commit"
You can additionally try re-installing FON's Firmware.
