What is the free roaming?

Free roaming means, that you can log in with your FON account user data (registered email and password) for free at any other FON Spot in the world. No more fees, no more day passes.

You will have free roaming, as long you keep your La Fonera online providing a FON Spot.

What happens if my 'La Fonera' is offline for any reason

There may be reasons, why your La Fonera isn't online and running

  • Your Internet connection is down or you have a black out.
  • Your changing ISP
  • You're moving and doe not have a Internet connection for some time
  • Or your 'La Fonera' has a technical problem

As all this can happen, and it's not necessarily your fault, we don't want you to lose your roaming privileges immediately. So roaming is still possible for 30 days after your La Fonera went offline. After this time, you will get an error message informing you about the issue, if you try to log in at a 'FON captive portal' .

After 30 days you will your roaming privileges and you will not be able to log in at FON Spots with this FON account. The account figures as blacklisted, but your FON profile status is still 'Bill' or 'Linus'.

What can I do to get my roaming privileges back?

Nothing as easy as this. Simply switch on your La Fonera. Once your La Fonera has been reactivated (When SSID FON_AP is visible again and the router figures as 'online' in your users zone My FON), after a couple of days your roaming privileges will be restored. To benefit all Foneros we wait a few days to ensure that La Fonera is online again in a continuous way. You are able to check your La Fonera status in your user zone under "Configure your FON Router".

If your stay blacklisted after 4 days, please contact the Support Team.

Troubleshooting

How do I know, if my 'La Fonera' is really online

On the main page of your user zone (My FON) you can see the status as it seen by FON.

When it's shown as offline in your 'My FON' area, it means, that we don't receive the 'Heartbeat signal' from that 'La Fonera'. In that case check the following:

  1. Do you see both SSIDs (MyPlace & FON_AP)? Can you connect with both? Are you able to surf on both?
  2. Reboot the la Fonera (powercicle). If you have a router in front of the 'La Fonera', reboot this also (switch off both, plug in first your ISP's router and then La Fonera when the first one is completely booted). Check all network cable. Check you online status in the 'My FON' area (it can take some minutes to change).
  3. Check out if a firewall on your first router is blocking port 1938, 1812, 1813 or 53.
  4. If this didn't work out, try a hardware reset.
  5. If your status changes to online, but goes offline after a while, please send us date and time, of when you tried to reboot/reset the router.
