How secure is the FON connection?

FON ensures that its systems comply with tight security measures and for that reason constantly incorporates improvements to guarantee the highest level of security available.

FON will report immediately to the relevant authorities any illegal and/or criminal activity that comes to its attention and that could potentially damage its system and/or any of it users.

Is the La Fonera secure?

FON ensures a safe Internet connection using the La Fonera. If you normally use the private one to connect, your network will be totally secured. Below, you can find the security protocol specifications for the La Fonera:

Authentication: WEP 64bit/128bit / WPA / WPA 2 / WPA-mixed Encryption: TKIP / AES / Mixed

As well as having these protocols we would also like to convey that all Foneros connecting to a WiFi signal within the FON community are registered users and can be located.

FON_AP does not have any encryption because it is the signal used to share your connection with other Foneros. This connection is secure because only registered Foneros can connect to it with their username and password. All connections on that network are logged by our system.

Users who connect to FON_AP are logged onto a different sub-network and can't access yours.

What happens if another Fonero does illegal stuff over my Internet?

Each user of the FON Community is registered with FON and accepts the general terms and conditions of FON which prohibit illegal activities. If someone breaks these rules we will immediately exclude this person from the use of the FON Community and block his access. By using FON and its safety features, WPA encryption for your private WiFi called "MyPlace " and centrally administered passwords for the FON WiFi, you already fulfill important safety criteria, that are substantially better than many existing alternatives and of course better than operating an open WiFi hotspot. FON complies with the relevant legislation of those countries where it operates and if someone intentionally breaks the rules of our community, we will co-operate with the correspondent National Authorities when requested and disclose the user data to them.
