I can't find my Fonera on maps.fon.com

Sometimes the location is not saved during the first registration. Please logon again on www.fon.com with your fon credentials and visit your fonspot and move your fonspot a tiny tiny bit and press again on submit. Then revisit maps.fon.com and it should now be present on your chosen location at maps.fon.com

My Fonera is down according to maps.fon.com

Symptoms:

  • Please check the 3 leds on your fonera.
    • The power led should be 100% green (and not black or yellow);
    • the internet & wifi should show activity (green and/or yellow).
  • Check if you see your "FON_" signal in your network neighbourhood
  • Check if you can connect to your "FON_" signal

Solution:

  • Power Recycle your fonera
    • Remove the power cable at the back of your fonera for 5 seconds. Wait for 2 minutes untill your fonera is 100% booted
    • Recheck your fonera on maps.fon.com and see if it's active again
  • If this happens quiet frequently...You could buy a digital timer to put between the fonera adaptor and your power outlet.

Possible reasons are:

  • Lot's of adsl providers have a pppoa/ppoe session of 48 hours. Sometimes there is a certain downtime between 2 sessions; Regularly the fonera checks if there is an internet connection. If at that moment your adsl connection is down...the fonera might stop functioning.

My Fonera doesn't want to show FON_AP, the Myplace tells me there is an issue

  • Is your fonera connected to a 10mbit hub or old adsl modem? The fonera has an autosensing network connector(10/100mbit, half/full duplex) but tests indicates there might be an issue on some old 10mbit hubs/modems that do not support autosensing. A solution is to put a 100mbit switch in between or upgrade your modem with a newer model

My Fonera reboots when someone connects

  • Perhaps that user has powersaving enabled -> some chipsets have a compatibility issue. Ask them to disable powersaving
  • Perhaps he has a virus that tried to connect to a whole lot of sites/servers at once (DDOS attack). The fonera perhaps a reboot due to this. It could be an email spam virus or a P2P client that creates lots of connections in a small timeframe!
  • Perhaps you have a 10mbit hub connection between your internet modem and fonera. This might cause collisions which interferes with the Fonera secured authentication during this foneros online session... replace with at least a 100Mbit switch (cheap!)

Send location via maps.fon.com

Current solution : receiver has to copy&paste the url in notepad; remove the trailing http:// and copy paste what's left over to the adressbar of his Internet Browser

I can't logon to my fonspot : i'm connected somewhere else

  • Although you can have registered more than 1 fonspot on your foneroid; you are only allowed to be connected to *1* fonspot.

You can be connected 20 times at that hotspot... but as soon as you move from 1 fonspot to the other you have to be sure to have logged off on the first one. There is a timeout of +- 5 minutes if you didn't properly disconnected.

  • it's best to not put your foneras close to each other; or not to connect automatically to a fonspot but choose the best one;

hence Windows likes to change hotspot when it thinks the quality of one of them is deteriorating...which is not correct hence your fonspot is switching FON_AP <-> MyPlace. But some Wireless Card drivers think one of them is going "down" due to a misinterpretation of the Wifi Standards which FON obbeys.

My Fonspot is "grey" but all leds are green

  • During it's boot (could be a small electrical outage?) the La Fonera checks the internet for the correct time/date from an Atomic Clock. If your adsl/cable connection was severed as well it's possible that La Fonera was not able to fetch the correct date/time and thus will be sending heartbeats from the year 2000... which is older than 30-60 minutes for FON and thus you are Greyed out on maps.fon.com allthough you're fonspot is running and all 3 leds are green.
    • In the past a fon user that connected was reported in the travel history in the year 2000.
    • Latest firmware fixes this. As soon as someone connects to the PUBLIC channel of your wifi hotspot it will perform another NTP request for the correct date/time! Your fonera will be again "green" on maps.fon.com

FONMAPS : Why are there Japanese/Korean fonspots in the Benelux?

  • at a certain point in time the longtitude & lattitude were mixed and temporally those fonspot owners registered their hotspot on the wrong place. These people haven't moved their fonspot anymore to the correct place. Also the FONmaps team haven't yet found time in the last two years to fix their corrupt database...

FONMAPS : Why are there more Fonspots in the Ocean near Ivoir Coast/Africa?

  • People that don't move their fonspot on the maps.fon.com while registrating, are left on coordinates longtitude 0, lattitude 0.

And yes there are more fonspots in the ocean then in eg a country like Belgium

FONMAPS : Location of fonspots

  • I didn't found a fonspot on coordinates X,Y ; I connected to a non-listed fonspot in another city and according to the travel logs a day later I was somewhere in the woods where there is no electricity & internet... People are sharing their internet but not telling the correct location where they live to avoid people visiting them and using their internet! WHAT CAN WE DO?

FONMAPS : POI Export of fonspots

  • When we import fonspots in our tomtom we are also looking at fonspots that have been offline for more than 2 years...

Gas is expensive...why can't we export only the active hotspots?

Certificate Authority issue on FONspots for mobile devices

In order to enhance your security at public hotspots, Easy Wi-Fi makes sure a hotspot is authentic before automatically logging you in. This prevents you from being connected to phony hotspots that have been setup to steal your username, password and other personal data.

In order to check the authenticity of a hotspot, Easy Wi-Fi examines a digital certificate supplied by the hotspot and compares it with a list of trusted certificate authority (CA) certificates. Your phone, however, may only have a limited set of trusted CA certificates. If your phone does not have a required CA certificate, then you will be prompted to accept the unknown certificate from the hotspot during the login process. This may reduce your ability to safely use a wide variety of public hotspots.

In order to improve your security you can download and install a larger collection of trusted CA certificates from http://www.devicescape.com/certs.

FON router registration questionnaire within IE7

I'm using IE7 browser for registering my FON router and I cant find the button to save changes FIXED

When you try to register your La Fonera using Internet Explorer 7 web browser you might wonder how to "save" and complete the registration.

That's because the page may not be displayed correctly with IE7, and the "save" button is half hidden under the map (see screenshot beside). If you do not manage to click on the radio buttons, give it a try with Firefox.

My Fonera boots all the time

  • your internet modem is set on "half duplex 10/100mbit"
  • You have a fonera model 2100/2200 which is set to auto detect.
  • If you can configure your internet modem on "autodetect" ... you can solve this...
  • You can buy a cheap 100mbit switch and place it between Fonera & Internet modem...this solves the problem as well.
  • You can create a new fon account; send yourself a discount code and buy a Fonera+ which doesn't have this issue as well

FON Wifi Channel doesn't change

  • I tried changing the wifi channel but both my iPhone and Netstumbler tell me it didn't change.
  • Tried 1, 6,11 using a stock firmware (0.7.2r3) and model 2100 fonera

Missing text boxes in the registration form

Some of the text fields and drop down boxes of the registration form are dynamically loaded, depending on the data you provide before (like country). It seems that this doesn't work sometimes. We are aware and we are working on a much simpler registration form. What can you do if this happens to you?

  1. Clear your browser cache and restart the browser
  2. Fill in the from from top to bottom - some fields are checked immediately - wait until the green symbol appears beside.
  3. If all this doesn't succeed, please try with another browser and/or PC.
