What is it Useful For
The Fonera 2.0 ships a linux software, called Samba, which allows it to share files across windows networks. This protocol is supported by almost every operating systems and many media center devices. You will be able to access wirelessly the files of the USB drive connected to the Fonera:
- Copy or paste files
- Edit or delete files
- Read media files!
Before Getting Started
By default windows network share option is activated. If you have disabled it at some point, reactivate it in the Fileserver menu, and make sure to have followed the guidelines regarding USB storage use before proceeding.
Access to Shared Folders from Windows XP
While connected to the Private Signal or from a LAN port of the Fonera
From windows file explorer you just have to look for Fonera in My Network Places. When double clicking on it you will be prompted for credentials:
- The username is fonero and cannot be changed
- The password is the general password of your Fonera, the one used to access the dashboard. Default one is admin
You will then be able to browse your files.
Note: it might take time for the Fonera folder to appear under My Network Places if so, an alternative method is simply to type \\fonera\Media\ in the address bar of windows XP file explorer or to apply the same method as the one described for access from WAN side.
While connected from the WAN side of your Fonera
You might want to access your shared folders from the WAN side of your Fonera (eg: from a computer connected directly to your broadband router):
- 2.2.1: From the dashboard of your Fonera check the WAN IP of your Fonera, i.e. the IP that your broadband router has given to your Fonera. It is written in the bottom left box: bellow Internet connection in front of IP Address (eg: 192.168.1.146). Write this IP down.
- 2.2.2: From the dashboard of your Fonera, in Settings >> Firewall >> Application enable the access to Windows Network from WAN. More details here if needed.
- 2.2.3: On the computer connected on the WAN side of your Fonera, from the windows file explorer, under the Tools menu, select Map Network Drive...
- 2.2.4: Configuring it as followed will make the drive available from windows file explorer:
- 2.2.5: Select the letter you want your network dire to use (eg: Z:)
- 2.2.6: As Folder enter \\WAN.IP.OF.THE.FONERA\Media where WAN IP is the one you wrote down at step 2.2.1.
- 2.2.7: Check Reconnect at logon if you want the drive to be available even after reboot.
- 2.2.8: When clicking on your network drive you will be prompted for credentials: the username is fonero and cannot be changed and the password is the general password of your Fonera, the one used to access the dashboard (default one is admin).
Note: This method can as well be used to map a network drive when accessing the Fonera from its private signal or LAN port, in that case, just replace \\WAN.IP.OF.THE.FONERA\Media by \\fonera\Media
